    Dear Sailor (2011)
    Dear Sailor:

I hope this missive does not reach you too late, and that you are still in search of inspiration on the questions and scenarios that might be satisfactorally explored in a story written for my pleasures. If, however, you have already begun a thousand words on your favorite hobbyhorse, please ignore the rest of this letter and continue on at your pleasure.

A bit about what I like in general )

    Drop Dead Diva )

P.S. If you are not familiar with the actual legal profession, as practiced in these United States, please do not write any law stuff. The law on this show is ridiculous when it is not terrifying, and it is the one thing about the show that makes me cringe SO MUCH.

    Haven )

    Lost Girl )

    X-Men Movieverse )

    A note on AO3 skins
If you had created a skin PRIOR to the most recent codepush that you liked, you MAY be able to recover and use it, sort of.

Go to http://archiveofourown.org/users/YOURUSERNAME/skins and select to use it. If it was based on the Archive 1.0 skin, it should mostly work.

    I hope this helps someone.

It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Yuletide
Yuletide Nominations are open through Monday, November 14, 9:30 p.m. EST (UTC -5).

I have nominated 2 Broke Girls, NCIS Los Angeles, and Razia's Shadow.

If you have been sitting around thinking, "God, I would love to make a selfless sacrifice that would make zvi happy at no cost to me," you might nominate the new sitcom Whitney, with the characters of Alex and Whitney.

Or, you might make a multi-fandom celebration vid to Rihanna's Cheers (I'll Drink to That).

Or you'd participate in the threesome prompt meme, The Cookie Jar. By nominating or by making a fill.

    One of those.

    Links and OTW Elections
An assortment of links which are potentially interesting to readers of this journal:

Mobipocket support is going away at Allromance/Omnilit. This may affect other ebook retailers; I don't know which organizes Overdrive is the back-end for.

cathy reminds you to write meaningful link text, not click here and its elaborations.

rachelmanija is offering psychological diagnoses of fictional characters I find this illuminating and sometimes amusing.

brownbetty is crossmixing characters from canon with apocalypses from another and summarizing the results.

I'm not sure what I think of this checklist of good management. I suppose the problem is that either it isn't necessary for people in support functions to know where the overall company is going, or I've never been in a well-managed situation. Both, of course, might be true.

Megan Garber at Nieman Labs suggests that the future is now, and that we are in the process of seeing serious ideas freed from books, or books serving as a single stop in the public development of public ideas.

    The OTW election is SOON.

Cathy has a compilation ofpublic statements by the candidates.

I am sort of confused about what to think of it and how to think about it. The problem I am having is this, I think: I tend to think of the OTW as an appendage to the Archive of Our Own. This is not accurate, but it is how the organization as a whole often plays out in public fandom. (In the wider world of ideas, I would guess that Friend of the Court briefs and comments to the Copyright Commissioner in the US, and helping other people make analogous arguments in other countries, would be their widest impact.) But in my day to day fannish life, it's the Archive that is what I care about. My thoughts on the candidates )

    Other people have thoughts, too.

Thoughts on the state of me
    1) I got a promotion at work. This is very exciting, except that I work for evil, so it feels rather a bit like descending the power ladder in hell. But more money, which I will donate to public radio and women's health clinics which perform abortions, and bitch magazine, etc.

    2) Several weeks ago I made [personal profile] caorann go to poly speed dating with me. Result? Result! )

    3) This weekend was amazingly nice. What I did Saturday and Sunday )

    4) I am considering going to Escapade. I've finally realized that I do best at work if I have at least one long weekend a month, and I like being around fannish people. I'm going to Bascon in November, con.txt in June and Con*strict in July, so it's not like I won't have fannish stimulation this year, but I suspect I'll be in the mood by February to talk a lot about BSOs fucking. A lot. Yays and nays on Escapade welcome in the comments.

    5) I have some more stuff I want to write, but I also need to get off my ass and do some [community profile] 3_ships housekeeping, so more later. (Hopefully my next substantive entry won't be two months in the future. Why did I last write something more than a pointer elsewhere in August?)

Inexpensive e-book of interest to some of our regular viewers
Stan Lee and the Rise and Fall of the American Comic Book ($2.00 B&N), by Tom Spurgeon and Jordan Raphael, is the Nook Daily Find.
    Book Description
Based on interviews with Stan Lee and dozens of his colleagues and contemporaries, as well as extensive archival research, this book provides a professional history, an appreciation, and a critical exploration of the face of Marvel Comics. Recognized as a dazzling writer, a skilled editor, a relentless self-promoter, a credit hog, and a huckster, Stan Lee rose from his humble beginnings to ride the wave of the 1940s comic books boom and witness the current motion picture madness and comic industry woes. Included is a complete examination of the rise of Marvel Comics, Lee’s work in the years of postwar prosperity, and his efforts in the 1960s to revitalize the medium after it had grown stale.

    Aaargh!
I saw this vid in early August. It's an X Men vid which uses source from First Class and X3. I'm pretty sure it's the one which parallels Magneto/X, Jean/Scott, and Rogue/Wolverine, but I'm not sure about Scot, Rogue, and Wolverine, honestly. It is very, very affecting, even if, unlike me, you knew what happened to Professor X in X 3.

Of course, I can't remember the vidder or the song, so I can't find the vid again. PLEASE HELP! What vid am I thinking of?

    Looking for a PCP
A primary care physician, not a schedule 1 drug.

Do you guys have any recommendations for female physicians in DC or Southern MD (basically PG or Montgomery counties) who are Metro accessible? If you don't have a recommendation for a doctor, do you know a nice medical practice? If you don't have a recommendation for a medical practice, do you have a recommendation for a site that does doctor reviews and isn't overrun by paid liars? If you don't have that, how do you normally pick a doctor? (I have never picked a doctor. When I was younger, I went to Kaiser, and you just made an appointment at the center most convenient to you. After Kaiser, I worked for a hospital, in the credentialing office, and I had access to records which I used improperly to pick out a doctor.)

    Reel Affirmations XX

Full Schedule of Films to be Shown

Does anyone have interest in going to see any of those movies with me? I'm open to just about anything with lesbians, but I can probably be talked into other films.

I feel like I just pushed a Staples button
When I originally booked my flight to Bascon, I did it in May and was very proud of myself for being so On Top Of Things…right up until the point where I realized that I had booked to LAX instead of SFO. I changed both flights for only $30! )

    Useful new DW thing
If you go to http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display and select Comment Hierarchy: Display Explicit Comment Hierarchy Indicators (site scheme only), then, when you view a discussion in sitescheme, comments will be numbered as if they were in an outline. This is most useful if you can't process the indents on a comment screen (screen too small, not experiencing the screen visually) or if you are viewing an entry in ?view=flat, but I sometimes find it useful just for discussions with a lot of branching and back and forth. The only thing that's not so great about it is that it's not easily discoverable, but that's why I am telling you about it.

    For reference, the suggestions discussion.

    Butt in Chair Time
Teaching my Sunday School class is going really well. Preparing an Adult Education Curriculum for our congregation is going pretty well.

Applying the lessons of the class – Spirit in Practice – to my own life is not going so well.

I have a hard time doing unpleasant or boring things for myself. If I feel like I am meeting an obligation or expectation of others, I am fairly reliable. If I am trying to improve myself or work towards building myself something, I am not reliable. The more tenuous the connection between the tedium and the outcome, the worse I am.

So, that's one problem. I am having difficulty applying butt in chair time. I have identified one practice from the class that I want to engage in more regularly, journaling, and this is the second substantial journal entry I have made since the class started, and the first to address anything about the class. (I want to do roughly half and half. My willingness and ability to order my fannish thoughts has been on the wane for a while, and I would like to get back to that, I like making those statements and I actually find the process of creating them pleasurable, or at least I find the process of doing them rewarding, and not just the product, which is the way I usually feel about fanfic.)

The other problem, of course, is that with the exception of journaling, I haven't come to any conclusions about additional practices I would like to integrate into my life, even though I'm teaching a ten week course on that very question! Part of the problem is that preparing and giving the course is taking a lot of the attention that I have been able to devote to religious questions. I think the other problem is that I am still wrestling with myself as a person who is religious but not spiritual, so I am still working on translating some of the fluffier spiritual concepts into something which is meaningful, useful, and actionable.

Luckily, the above means that I have a focus for my religious journaling. When I can get my damn butt in my damn chair. (And not play Mille Bourne or Dope Wars or spend hours reading about *nymwars.)
